Gotta Get Away: Old Town Alexandria

In Gotta Get Away, The Hatchet explores well-known or off-the-beaten track vacations spots – all within 50 miles of campus.

Take the Blue Line to King Street, walk a few blocks, turn left at the Potomac River, and then a few meters later, the 21st century abruptly falls away.

Captain’s Row, the most historic avenue in Old Town Alexandria, provides an easy escape from the fast-paced GW lifestyle.

As modern asphalt gives way to a timeworn cobblestone road lined with idyllic, all-American townhouses, visitors are transported back in time. Authentic gas lamps flicker near the thresholds to these historic homes, many complete with old-fashioned American flags.

If the cars lining the row don’t bring visitors back to reality, either an empty stomach or the need to shop will. Thankfully, Alexandria is up on the times when it comes to wining, dining, and shopping.

Where to shop: King Street, the central street for Old Town, is lined with both chain and boutique clothing stores for men and women. Several antique shops may also appeal to visitors, though a Sunday visit will limit shopping to the window variety as most local stores are closed.

Where to eat: Public houses abound along King Street, and I happened into O’Connell’s. The dark wood walls, leather booths, and chandeliers sweep you back to English pub culture. The menu was diverse, the meals affordable and, as with any good food, come in portions best shared with friends.

A local froyo shop next to O’Connell’s makes a decent milkshake, and milkshakes make the perfect dessert to sip as visitors ride Old Town’s free trolley back from the riverfront to the King Street metro stop.
