HFStival returns rock to D.C.

In a blast from alternative rock’s sweat-soaked past, the HFStival, an annual concert sponsored by alternative radio station WHFS, will return to D.C. this September for the first time since 2006.

The concert, scheduled for Sept. 18 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., will include performances by Third Eye Blind, Billy Idol, Everclear, Ed Kowalczyk of Live, the Presidents of the United States of America, Fuel, Lit, and Marcy Playground.

While the original idea was for the concert to be a July 4 festival, the first HFStival was held in Upper Marlboro, Md. in 1992. For the next six years, the rock festival was held in RFK Stadium, which became its official home.

From rock legends to hip hop stars, the festival has garnered big names over the years, including the Violent Femmes, the Ramones, Foo Fighters, Wyclef Jean, Rage Against the Machine, Hoobastank, and Eminem.

After reaching a peak in 2000, the festival steadily declined in popularity until the station went off the air in 2005. However, WHFS still exists today as an HD station at 94.7 HD2.

Tickets for this year’s festival are on sale now, with prices ranging from $35-50.
