Update, 6:51 p.m. — Sarah-Jo put back wins it for GW, pending review.
Update, 6:50 p.m. – Sarah-Jo Lawrence ties the game at 53. Cal ball with 12.1 seconds remaining.
Update, 6:48 p.m. — Colonials hold of the Bears, so after a McKeown timeout, GW will have the ball with a chance to tie. 1:05 remains.
Update, 6:44 p.m. – Jessica Adair makes two free throws and its 53-51 Cal with 1:45 to play. Walker and Hampton both have four fouls.
Update, 6:40 p.m. – The lead is still four, 51-47, with 3:20 left in the game. Cal will have the ball at the start of play. We haven’t seen from Whitney Allen in a while, as she has four fouls.
Lawrence and Jessica Adair have nine for GW. Parrish has 15.
Update, 6:36 p.m. – An Alexis Gray-Lawson three-pointer made the deficit four, and a Walker three-point play made it seven. Parrish just cut the lead to four with a three.
Update, 6:30 p.m. – It’s 43-38 Cal with GW having possession on the baseline. Cal just hit a clutch three-pointer to take the lead to five.
It’s Jessica Adair off the glass to cut the lead to three again, though.
Update, 6:27, p.m. – Two Walker free throws make it a 40-36 game. Cal has begun to employ a full court press that GW has had a couple issues with so far.
Update, 6:21 p.m. – Jazmine Adair tied the game with a bank shot over Devanei Hampton, but Ashley Walker took the lead back with a baseline drive.
Update, 6:20 p.m. – With 14 minutes remaining in the half, the Colonials are down 36-34. Sarah-Jo Lawrence’s short jumper has pulled GW within two. Cal’s ball.
Update, 6:10 p.m. – Colonials showing a little life in the first half, though Whitney Allen grabbed her third foul right after the opening possession. Parrish had a three-point play and Allen had a showy layup to get the Colonial crew on their feet.
Update, 5:47 p.m. – Halftime here with the Colonials still trailing 31-23. Beck got nailed with about 30 seconds left in the half and fell to the ground with her hands covering her right eye. She left the game and freshman Erica River replaced her. If GW wants to push back in the second half, there needs to be better perimeter defense. The Bears are 6-of-11 from behind the arc.
Update, 5:42 p.m. – Just a minute before the half, GW is down 31-23. Jazmine Adair just picked up her third foul.
Kim Beck just stole the ball and went in for a layup but came up short. On the rebound, Whitney Allen picked up her second foul. Not a good sign for GW, who has eight team fouls right now.
Update, 5:32 p.m. – With five minutes remaining, GW is down 25-20. The Bears seem to have the upper hand, but credit the Colonials for sticking around. Both Adairs have two fouls.
Update, 5:22 p.m. — Sarah-Jo Lawrence just left the game grabbing her left wrist. This could be related to Saturday’s game when she hit the floor hard at midcourt.
Update, 5:19 p.m. – After falling down 15-7, the Colonials have come back to make it a 15-12 game. Unfortunately for GW, Jessica Adair just drew a charge and now has two fouls.
GW is getting outrebounded 11-6, but has allowed only 3 turnovers to Cal’s 5. McKeown and company are going to have to keep the Bears relatively close if they want a shot at winning this one.
Update, 5:09 p.m. – At our first media timeout, Cal leads 10-7. It’s interesting to see that while most of the hype for this game has focused on the play in the paint, there have been four three-pointers hit already, including three from Cal. Jessica Adair and Cal’s Devanei Hampton each have one foul.
Update, 5:01 p.m. — We just finished introductions, so it’s about time to get underway here. The Colonial faithful are trying their best to be loud, but it’ll be tough with a decidedly Cal-favored crowd. It will be interesting to see if the homecourt advantage has any effect.
We’re here extra early for the women’s team battle with Cal this evening, and though Maples Pavilion is rather empty right now, it’s obvious that the heat has been turned up (figuratively speaking) for the Round of 32. Tonight’s match-up pits sixth-seeded GW against third-seeded Cal in a game that exudes hints of a possible Colonials’ upset. Coach Joe McKeown’s blizzard offense often perplexes teams that haven’t seen it before, the Colonials can match-up against Cal’s interior in size, and GW might have an edge in backcourt strength as well. Then again, GW is taking on a Top 10 team nationally — so it could be long plane ride back to Foggy Bottom instead.
The ever-colorful Whitney Allen is the only Colonial player walking around the court right now, an hour before what she hopes is not her last game as a Colonial. The rest of the team should be out for warmups soon.
