ESPN has just announced that the GW women’s basketball team has earned a No. 6 seed and will play No. 11 Auburn in Stanford, Calif., in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. The Colonials have already seen Auburn once this season, winning a close game (68-66) thanks to a last-second Lisa Steele three.
If GW wins that game, they’ll likely play the University of California, a three seed. That game, also in Stanford, would pit GW against a likely local favorite, as the Golden Bears’ campus is less than an hour from Palo Alto. Beyond that, the road to the Final Four is even tougher, as they’ll have to navigate No. 2 Rutgers, who has already beaten them 67-42 this season, and top-seeded Connecticut, in Greensboro, N.C.
This is the second year in a row the squad has been sent to California for the first two rounds. Last year, it was in L.A. as a No. 5 seed, beating Boise State in the first round and Texas A&M in the second.
