I am writing in response to Ben Krimmel’s Forum piece, “Coming to a Consensus on Library Etiquette,” (Nov. 6, online).
GW Libraries always appreciates feedback from students because we are here to serve your needs. The entrance floor was designed specifically as a place for collaborative group study because GW students wanted this type of set up. We gathered all types of feedback on how the floor was designed and the goal was to create a space that the students would support.
The floor’s set up encourages group study for a few reasons. The first is that the furniture is arranged in a way to encourage group conversation. The second is the inclusion of a snack lounge, which naturally becomes an area of conversation. The last is that the Entrance Floor now houses the service hub of the library, which includes the circulation desk, the reference desk, and the library entrance desks which all facilitate conversation.
Our group study space policies allow for low volume conversation, as long the group is being respectful, so I want to thank you for reminding everyone to respect the rights of others on the Entrance Floor. Gelman Library has quiet spaces on floors 3, 4, 5 and 6 if you are interested in a quiet study space.
