For the first time since the 1986-87 season, no one from GW’s men’s basketball program was named to one of the Atlantic 10’s three all-conference teams nor given any other individual awards. The selections were announced Monday, with Massachusetts’s Gary Forbes earning Player of the Year, Xavier’s Stanley Burrell taking home Defensive Player of the Year and Xavier coach Sean Miller earning Coach of the Year.
Junior Rob Diggs, whose personal statistics (13.9 points her game, 7.7 rebounds per game) rival players on all three teams, said Tuesday afternoon that he wasn’t even aware of the awards. Upon being told that neither he nor any of his teammates earned any of the accolades, he said he doesn’t care and that he doesn’t focus on anything like conference awards.
Director of Athletics Jack Kvancz said he understands why the 14 A-10 coaches, who vote on the recipients, would not put any of GW’s players on the three teams. “If the team doesn’t make the (conference) tournament, how can you can put someone on the (conference) team.”
Burrell, who was one of three Xavier players honored and grabbed two of the five Xavier awards, was still unhappy with this and said in a press conference Monday afternoon that he thought more of his teammates deserved recognition.
