Update, 8:30 p.m. — GW cruises, 70-43. The Colonials play tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of the Xavier/Saint Joe’s game, which just tipped. See gwhatchet.com later tonight for a full recap.
Update, 7:55 p.m. — We’ve seen no let-up from GW, as the Colonials now lead 57-34 with five minutes to play. Everyone seems to be pitching in, with the recent exception of Lawrence, who has been on the bench for a while with ice wrapped over her left shoulder. There wasn’t any big collision, but Lawrence’s situation could be an issue for the Colonials.
Update, 7:18 p.m. — Finally, some numbers. Lawrence leads the Colonials with 10 points, while Allen and Antelia Parrish have 8 a piece. The Rams have committed 13 turnovers and a shooting just barely above 20 percent.
Update, 7:10 p.m. — GW has continued its run and now leads 36-17 at the half. Still no stats, but suffice it to say that the Colonials are controlling this game. They’ve had little resistance on the offensive end and seem to be more willing to display their talent and athletic advantage over the Rams.
Absegami High School Stars Tara Booker and Sara Mostafa, two of GW’s 2008 recruits, are here cheering for the Colonials. I got a chance to speak with them both during a media timeout, and they seemed quite excited to be playing for GW next season. Mostafa said they’ve been watching GW for nearly a year now and said each time the Colonials’ bring something new to the table. The pair just finished leading Absegami to the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 girls’ basketball title.
The Colonials tipped off against the Rams around 6:20 p.m. and so far hold a 21-12 lead over Rhode Island with 11:40 remaining in the first half. Technical difficulties on press row make us unable to give exact stats, but Whitney Allen seems to be leading the offensive charge for the Colonials. The two squads traded baskets for the first few minutes, but the Colonials have since gone a 13-2 run and really shut down the Rams offensively. Right now Erica Rivera is on the floor, along with Kim Beck, Sarah-Jo Lawrence, and the Adair twins.
