Hatchet Reporters Patrick Rochelle and Emily Katz share their latest musical obsessions.
Patrick Rochelle
hellogoodbye: “When We First Met”
The wait is over: hellogoodbye has released a new album. Actually, that’s not true, but at least they put up a few new tracks on their Myspace page. The band’s new album should drop sometime this summer.
Rhett Miller: “Nobody Says I Love You Anymore”
My relationship with this song has always been a rocky one. After hearing his self-titled solo album that came out last year, I hated it. But then I realized I was just jealous of Rhett’s long hair and the reactions girls of all ages have to it. If you like what you hear, check out his band Old 97’s.
The Morning Benders: “Stitches”
The California band opened their set with this song at the Black Cat a few weeks ago, and it is easily one of the best tracks off their new album, “Big Echo.”
Stars: “Your Ex Lover is Dead”
For a band with only five members, Stars makes a big sound. Accompanied by what seems to be an orchestra of violins and horns, the Canada natives tell the story of meeting love after it’s over. Beware: this track is not for the faint of heart.
Emily Katz
Sounding like a more catchy Animal Collective, Delorean is sure to be getting lots of buzz in the near future. This song is perfect to play outside on a sunny day; it just has a pleasant vibe.
Usher feat. Nicki Minaj: “Lil’ Freak”
Nicki Minaj brings her token sass to this track, contributing to a sick collaboration that will most likely be ubiquitous in a matter of weeks.
Patti Smith: “Because the Night”
Poetic while still high-energy, Patti Smith is a musical genius and this song is her magnum opus. Her album “Horses” is a must-get for any music fan.
