Update, 4:07 p.m….Final score: 59-53, GW. A couple mistakes on the Colonials’ part in the final few minutes put Richmond back within 2 but the Spiders couldn’t take advantage. Diggs finishes with 12 points while sophomore Damian Hollis, despite fouling out, went for 14 points. This is GW’s first back-to-back wins since their its two games of the season.

Update, 3:38 p.m…The Colonials now lead 49-42 and look more energized than they have for most of the season. The Spiders have also unraveled, turning the ball over and failing to convert on offense when the scoring opportunities present themselves. The momentum is with GW right now.
—
Update, 3:22 p.m….GW is hanging in there and is now down by 1 with 11:45 left to play in the game.
Mike Jarvis is in the audience today. Jarvis, the men’s basketball coach at GW from 1990 to ’98, was inducted into the athletic department’s hall of fame two weeks ago. I also reported that day that Jarvis said he wants to get back into coaching and that he would consider GW if the position became available.

Update, 2:50 p.m….We’re at the break and the Colonials trail the Spiders 32-25. Diggs has 18 points and has pretty much single-handedly kept GW in this game. Freshman Xavier Alexander has missed two free throws, including one about three minutes ago that just completely airballed. If the game stays tight, it will be hard to look past mistakes like that.
—
Update, 2:31 p.m…7:41 left in the half and GW still trails Richmond, 21-15. Junior Rob Diggs already has 10 points.
—
Update, 2:12 p.m…Four minutes in and the Spiders are out to a quick 12-2 lead. They’re quick to shoot and they’ve made the shots so far, hitting three threes and an impressive jumper.

The Colonials (7-14, 3-8 Atlantic 10) host the Spiders (14-10, 7-4 A-10). Richmond has historically been one of the weaker teams in the conference but, like most of the other squads in the A-10, has seen somewhat of a resurgence this year. They’re currently second in the conference, tied with Temple and Saint Joe’s.
The Spiders don’t have any overly impressive out of conference wins this season; their biggest victory thus far was probably over then-No. 16 Dayton, 80-63. This was right at the beginning of the Flyers’ fall from grace, but it looks good on the schedule, nonetheless.
The Colonials have had a week off since earning their first road win of the season, an 80-71 victory over St. Bonaventure last Saturday. This is also their first home game since defeating Dayton two weeks ago. They are still struggling to qualify for the A-10 tournament, two games behind Fordham because of tiebreakers. The Rams are at Temple this afternoon.
GW is donning its buff jerseys this afternoon instead of the usual white home ones. I just spoke with Alyssa Greco, one of the team’s managers who is in charge of taking care of the uniforms, and she told me there isn’t any special reason that they’re wearing the gold instead of white. She did mention that the seniors (or in this year’s case, Maureece Rice) are given the gold one on senior day to commemorate their time at GW. She said that since there are only a few games left before senior day, which is March 8 against Massachusetts, she decided to dress them in the buff uniforms today.
Freshman Miles Beatty, who did not travel with the team to Olean, N.Y., last weekend for the St. Bonaventure game because he was suspended after breaking an unspecified team rule, is once again absent at today’s game. Sports Information Director Brad Bower just told me Beatty has been suspended indefinitely.
