Smith Center
-Men’s and women’s basketball
-Women’s volleyball
-Gymnastics
-Swimming
-Men’s water polo
-Women’s water polo
While Lisner Auditorium and University Yard are more-frequented entertainment hubs, the Smith Center has begun to rival speeches and Fall Fest as athletics has drawn crowds of students to games and competitions.
Last May, the Smith Center floor underwent a “monumental” court redesign, putting the gymnasium on the map nationally.
The Colonial Army, GW’s student fan section, has helped bring out school spirit at men’s basketball games. The men’s basketball team went 12-1 at home last season, and almost every game sold out down the stretch. Notables like ESPN’s Michael Wilbon and CNN’s Wolf Blitzer made appearances.
Don’t forget to head to the natatorium to watch the men’s and women’s water polo teams, as well as the men’s and women’s swimming teams up close, and be part of a boisterous crowd. The GW diving team will make its debut in the Smith Center, taking to the diving boards after installation over the summer.
Barcroft Park
-Baseball
The baseball field in Arlington, Va. is the least accessible venue for students. Without a shuttle or ZipCar, it’s difficult to get out to the ballpark to catch the baseball team. For the die-hard fans willing to take the 15-minute trip to the yard, contact GW athletics and catch a van to arrive about an hour and an half before first pitch.
The scenic field has newly laid turf and bleachers situated behind home plate between the two dugouts. No one is the crowd can have a bad view, and if you get hot in the stands, visit the full concession booth.
The Mount Vernon Campus
-Softball
-Men’s and women’s soccer
-Men’s and women’s tennis
-Lacrosse
For freshmen living on the Vern, not only do you have easy access to Pancakes with the Provost, but you can also roll out of bed and watch athletic events on any given day.
Catch a soccer or lacrosse practice on the way to your University Writing class. If you have a free afternoon in the spring, plan a picnic on the hill overlooking softball’s right field fence and watch an exciting team battle a conference opponent.
If none of those sports interest you, perhaps head over to the clock tower and watch the nationally ranked tennis team compete on the freshly painted blue tennis courts.
And if you want in on the action yourself, grab a group of friends for a pick-up game or join any number of club sports teams that compete on the turf.
Thompson Boat Center
-Men’s and women’s rowing
The Colonials’ rowing teams host local foes like Georgetown and national heavyweights such as Princeton on the Potomac River during a couple of annual regattas. Find a spot on the Washington Harbor boardwalk for the George Washington Invitational or the George’s Cup and watch as the boats come through the Key Bridge and begin to sprint toward the finish in front of the Georgetown waterfront.
Lerner Health and Wellness Center
-Men’s and women’s squash
While many know that the Lerner Health and Wellness Center is where you can get in a good workout, fitness class or pick-up basketball game, the facility also serves as the home court for two of GW’s most successful programs. The men’s and women’s squash teams play home matches against nationally ranked opponents on the third- and fourth-floor courts. With bleachers staged in front of every court, spectators can get up close to this fast-moving sport.
