Wink, a Georgetown boutique, recently held a trunk show for a new a line of jackets for women called Guy French. The nine styles of tailored women’s jackets on display were each designed with a touch of femininity to offset a typically structured and basic clothing style. The intimate shopping experience gave customers a taste of Guy French’s selection, which they can buy exclusively online.
Louisa Guy Roeder and Christina French Houghton created the clothing line after leaving their respective jobs in the arts to teach a sewing class together. The pair met five years ago as bridesmaids at a wedding and are now joint partners in a venture they call Guy French.
Houghton and Roeder chose to name each of their jackets after what they consider their muses – their friends.
The Camille: Updated and Versatile
Customers at the trunk show flocked especially to the Camille. According to Houghton, this style is ideal for a college girl.
“It’s quite loose and can be worn open or closed,” she explained.
The body and sleeves of the navy colored jacket fits snug across the arms and shoulders but the front relaxes into flowing ash gray flaps that button near the opposite hip. Deep pockets for keys or pens make the Camille practical, while the option to wear it open keeps it youthful and fresh.
Almost all Guy French jackets come with an intricately patterned 100% silk lining. Roeder likes to look at the linings like nice lingerie, “Nobody can see it, but you know it’s there.” Also the rolled up sleeves of the item allows the bared silky lining to pop out seductively like a lacy décolletage. One customer tried on the jacket inside out and with its meticulous craftsmanship, it looked just as chic.
The Sydney: I can’t believe it’s not a cardigan!
Houghton said their bestseller has been the Sydney jacket, a snug jacket made of stretchy black wool with a silk, polka dotted under layer that buttons closed. Many girls at GW can be seen pairing cardigans with blouses, camisoles or day dresses, so the Sydney would make an updated supplement to a closet full of sweaters.
“It fits perfect,” said a 25-year-old local of the Sydney style. “It’s hard finding jackets that fit small and fit small [in the shoulders] too.”
The Christine: Something for Professors Too
GW professors and students who need a professional wardrobe would be wooed by the Christine. Providing a little something special for work, the jacket has an attached silk scarf that runs along the lapel of the navy jacket, which can be buttoned on the opposite side. Similar colored fanned silk adorns the single vent in the back of the piece—adding another special touch to this business basic.
While the business is strictly sold online or at small trunk shows like this, Houghton and Roeder still have plans to grow. They plan to add a line of men’s jackets dubbed “French Guy” in the near future. If you missed the festivities Wednesday night, Guy French jackets are available now for pre order at www.guyfrench.com.
