This was a busy weekend for GW athletics. Besides the two basketball wins (men defeated Dayton Saturday night 57-54 and the women beat Richmond Sunday afternoon 78-51), there were a slew of other teams in action over the past two days. Here’s what went down:
Men’s squash swept Virginia and Haverford College Saturday at the Lerner Health and Wellness Center. The Colonials did not drop one contest, winning both competitions 9-0. They finish the regular season at 9-8 and now have the College Squash Association’s team championships, held at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., over President’s weekend.
Softball finished third at the Carolina Classic, bouncing back to beat North Carolina Central twice, once in the consolation game, after dropping games against Kent State and UNC . The Colonials also lost to East Carolina, 6-1 on Saturday. GW defeated North Carolina Central by a combined 36 runs. The Colonials (2-3) are next at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Feb. 26.
Women’s tennis lost, 5-2, to Richmond at Montclair Country Club in McLean, Va., Saturday afternoon. Freshmen Nadia Demidenko and Jennifer Hirsch picked up the two wins for the Colonials (4-3).
Men’s tennis fared a bit better, defeating the University of North Carolina-Greensboro 7-0 Saturday evening at the Regency Sport and Healthy Club in McLean. The Colonials (5-3) are now ranked no. 75 in the country and next host Xavier Feb. 15.
