Hatchet reporter Sara Murali tells students the styles to stock up on for the upcoming spring season.
Now that Snowmageddon and Snowpocalypse are officially over we can finally turn our focus to blooming cherry blossoms and springtime attire. With the change in season, it is almost time to retire our wool coats and mittens and don our new warm-weather wardrobe. If you are wondering which clothes are worthy of the upcoming spring season, this is where I come in.
Looks for the ladies
The military jacket: Particularly in neutrals like charcoal and navy, this is the perfect statement piece to spice up a pair of jeans and a simple tee. It’s also a great cover up for a girly dress or skirt for evening. You can think of this versatile piece as a tribute to the late and great Michael Jackson.
Motorcycle boots: These ultra chic boots are main course items on the spring menu. The boots are a
great change of pace from the tall riding boots popularized in the winter season. Pair these boots with jeans as well as feminine skirts or flirty dresses. Though the mix of harsh and delicate styles might seem mis-matched, the two looks actually complement each other and make for memorable outfits.
Ruffles Ruffles Ruffles: This girly texture adds a feminine and romantic touch to any outfit. While I personally love ruffled high-waisted skirts, the design also looks great on flowy tops or on blouse sleeves for a subtler touch. And the best part is that the flirty style is multi-purposed, working in both day and night attire.
Boyfriend Jeans: Ladies it is time for you to stop raiding your boyfriend’s closet for his amazingly comfortable slouchy jeans. This upcoming season the boyfriend jean is everywhere and finding the right fit while maintaining comfort is crucial. They are best relaxed throughout the leg and worn a little lower on the waist, but make sure that they do not fall off your hipbones please! Be sure to look for lighter washes,
perhaps with some distress to the fabric. Cuff the jeans at the ankle and wear them with bright ballet flats or even flip flops and sandals once the weather really heats up.
Best buys for the boys
Denim button-down: This lightweight, stylish piece is an excellent addition to any guy’s wardrobe. Look for faded denim hues with a bit of a western flair. Just remember to not pair this shirt with the same shade of jeans, unless you are trying to reproduce the overalls look.
V-neck cardigan: In a solid or a striped pattern it is another useful item to have in your closet this coming season. The cardigan goes best with a simple button-down or even a basic tee. Buttoned up or left open, a v-neck cardigan instantly adds an air of sophistication to any outfit.
Khaki Blazer: Looking for something to spice up your work attire? This upcoming season opt for a khaki blazer paired with a simple pair of cords or chinos. While this piece is great for dressing up, it also adds a little something extra to a simple t-shirt and jeans. Stores like Banana Republic and J.Crew have some amazing styles of the khaki blazer that every guy should check out.
