Restaurant Review: Maoz Vegetarian

This post was written by Hatchet Reporter Taylor Singer.

Juicy, cheap, and fulfilling – these are not usually the words one would choose to describe a vegetarian falafel restaurant, but Maoz Vegetarian is defying the norm.  Having opened its doors only two months ago, Maoz is just a brisk 15-minute walk from GW’s campus, and a great alternative for veggie-loving college students hoping to try something new.

Tucked between more well-established restaurants such as The Daily Grill and The Palm, Maoz still manages to draw a crowd with its brightly lit and eye-catching storefront sign. Sparsely furnished with three large wooden tables and green-tiled walls, the restaurant’s decor makes the place seem clean and fresh.  Because seating is limited, Maoz is definitely a spot for a quick lunch.

The modest menu hanging above the salad bar is inviting and to the point, offering only four “Meal Deals,” all featuring falafels in white or wheat pitas. Diners can choose between a regular Meal Deal, which comes with fries and a drink, for $8.75, the Junior Meal Deal, with a slightly smaller pita, for $7.30, a Salad Meal Deal for $9.50, and Maoz fries, in either Belgium or sweet potato style.  With plentiful salad bar fixings, sides such as avocado and hard-boiled egg, and toppings like zesty green chili peppers and garlic sauce, there is enough variety to appeal to any palette.  The falafel, cooked in canola oil, is perfectly crunchy on the outside and savory on the inside.  When tossed into pitas, these falafel treats are perfectly portioned and delectable down to the last bite.

With prices that match many of the University’s on-campus eateries, Maoz fits in perfectly with Foggy Bottom grub. With great food and a clean atmosphere, Maoz Vegetarian is good place for any college student looking for a delicious, healthy lunch.

Maoz Vegetarian is located on 1817 M St.  and is open from 11:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11:00 a.m.-3:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 12:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. on Sunday.
