The seventh-seeded GW women’s water polo team finished in last place at this weekend’s Eastern Championships at Brown University after losing matches to Hartwick College, the University of Michigan and Harvard University.

Brown defeated Princeton University 11-10 in double overtime to win the tournament, receiving an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament at Stanford University May 12-13.

No. 17 Hartwick, which defeated GW at the Smith Center March 31, beat the Colonials 11-7 in Saturday’s opening-round. Later in the day, No. 15 Michigan defeated GW 10-6. On Sunday, Harvard defeated GW, 10-7, in a seventh-place match.

GW’s Mia Fabian was named to the Second All-Tournament Team.

GW head coach Scott Reed said before the Championships that he expected a top-four finish for his young team.

Some of the nation’s best teams competed in the Championships. GW and Harvard were the only unranked teams. Princeton, last year’s winner, is ranked 14th in the nation.

The Colonials ended their second season at varsity level with a winning record (14-13), an improvement from last year’s 11-13 record.
