Solange walked on stage at Lisner Auditorium Saturday night, grabbed the microphone without saying a word and immediately began her opening song.
The young and talented R&B singer did not hesitate, and with her soothing vocals leading the band, her sound was as electrifying as it was impressive. Best known as Beyoncé’s younger sister, Solange strutted back and forth across the stage, exuding complete confidence and delivering a commanding performance with her band.
After the opening song, she went into her track “T.O.N.Y.,” with a catchy, heartbreaking chorus about fractious love that brought the crowd to their feet and had them singing along. Her more recent hit, “Losing You,” was less love-dependent and more anthemic and eager for freedom, with dispersed moments of dancing as the crowd cheered her on.
Her larger-than-life persona and bombastic performing style was often downplayed by her friendly and down-to-earth stage banter. She often struck up conversation and, on two occasions, requested that the lights be dimmed so she could see the audience’s faces.
“I feel mad love from y’all,” she said before launching into her closing song, “Sandcastle Disco.” “I just want to give it back.”
Despite it being one of her lesser-known tracks of the night, the song’s heavy Motown beats and serenading vocals made it captivating and exciting. When she said her goodbyes to the crowd, shaking hands with the front row, applause poured in until the lights turned back on.
