After starting the season 1-6, the GW baseball team got back on track with four straight wins, including a weekend sweep of St. Peter’s College. Strong pitching and an overall offensive attack gave GW three overwhelming victories. The Colonials look to continue their winning ways with a doubleheader against Howard Tuesday.

GW 11, St. Peter’s 3
Sunday March 11

The Colonials completed a sweep of the Peacock Sunday with a 11-3 victory at Barcroft Park. GW pitcher Chris Worth settled down after the Colonials scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. GW entered the inning with a 4-2 lead. Mike Bassett hit an RBI single, and senior Ross Smirne hit a two-run double to lift GW.

Worth gave up two runs in the top of the third before St. Peter’s Nick Edwards hit a run-scoring single. The Peacocks scored again in the following inning when Jimmy Brown singled in a run.

Worth finished the outing with two hitless innings, and GW relievers Tony King, Mike O’Connor and Bryan Beggs provided three more innings of scoreless baseball.

Worth (1-2) pitched six full innings and gave up three runs on five hits.

Tri-captain Matt Krimmel hit the only homerun of the day, a two-run shot to right that knocked in Travis Crowder and gave the Colonials an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

St. Peter’s pitcher Chris Hughes (0-1) allowed nine runs on seven hits. The Peacocks committed five errors in the game.

GW 9, St. Peter’s 1
Saturday March 10

Glen Skutnik pitched six strong innings, allowing one run on four hits in GW’s 9-1 rout of the Peacocks. Skutnik also struck out six in the win, GW’s second of the day.

Outfielder Dan Rouhier belted a first-inning two-run home run and drove in three runs in the game. Designated hitter Travis Crowder and second baseman Nick Iovacchini both had three hits in the contest, with Crowder also stealing three bases.

GW 15, St. Peter’s 4
Saturday March 10

The Colonials won the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, defeating St. Peter’s 15-4 at Barcroft Park. GW scored 12 runs on St. Peter’s starter Jack Baker in the first two and two-thirds innings. Ross Smirne, Tony Dokoupil, and Jake Wald had three hits apiece in the Colonials’ victory. Wald drove in four runs, including a two-run single capping GW’s six-run first inning.

The Colonials knocked 17 hits in game and received quality pitching from Ron Christie, who pitched six strong innings to notch his first victory of the season.
