It was a game, set, match for the GW men’s tennis team, which defeated host West Virginia University 5-2 Saturday, one day after acing George Mason, 7-0.
Freshman No. 1 singles player Matt Hane led the way for the Colonials posting a 6-4, 6-4 win against the Mountaineers and a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Patriots. Hane also paired with sophomore teammate Drew Zamansky in an 8-3 doubles win against West Virginia.
“West Virginia was a Big East Conference team,” Zamansky said Monday. “We came in knowing we could compete and we won five of six singles matches. And that was that.”
Against George Mason, Zamansky and Hane lost the day’s most competitive match, an 9-8 (4-1) tiebreaker loss in doubles play. In order to receive a point in doubles play, one team had to win at least two of three doubles matches. Despite the close doubles loss, GW won the other two matches, a victory from Kevin Wright and Mike Melen and a default win.
Hane, Wright, Kinzie Wright and Nick Vikstrom won in straight sets against the Patriots. Melen and Brett Warner earned default victories.
The women’s team responded from a tough 4-3 loss to Army Saturday to sweep Albany 7-0 at West Point. No. 1 singles player Tracy Wei, No. 2 Nazli Gencsoy and No. 3 Katarina Stastny earned perfect 6-0, 6-0 victories against Albany. Sam Fisher, Jen Sunshine and Lisa Borromeo won their matches in straight sets.
Against Army, Tracy Wei dominated Annie Weber 6-2, 6-1 and Nazli Gencsoy won 7-6, 6-3 over Cheryl Hamilton. GW earned its third point by winning two of three doubles matches. The pairs of Gencsoy and Wei (8-5), and Susie Coggin and Sam Fisher (8-4) were victorious for the Colonials.
But, the day was not as successful for Saturday’s No. 3 player Lindy First, who lost a tough three-set contest to Army’s Annie Collier 0-6, 6-2, 2-6. Stastny, Coggin and Fisher all fell short in competitive matches.
