The Dimock Gallery will open on the second floor of the newly constructed Media and Public Affairs building. The opening should coincide with the grand opening of the MPA building on March 7, said Lenore Mille, director of the Dimock Gallery.
The University’s permanent art collection is currently located in the lower lobby of Lisner Auditorium
The new venue, which will accommodate art shows, lectures and cultural events, will increase the gallery’s presence on campus, said Mille. At its Lisner locaton, the gallery is not accessible by elevator and has very low exposure. The new gallery is accessible by elevators, and “is widely visible for the flow of traffic up the main staircases,” Mille said.
The new facility will also have a large exhibit case and wall-hung art displayed in the area outside the doors of the gallery so that student and professional art can be displayed for the public.
The new gallery is comparable to the size of the current facility. Its first exhibit will be the Luther W. Brady, M.D., Collection of 20th Century Works on Paper, from the Picker Art Gallery at Colgate University.
The Lisner location will remain open at least until Feb. 28, when the current exhibition on Goya, Los Caprichos, will close. Mille does not know what the old venue will be used for after the opening of the new facility, but a space for exhibition overflow is possible, she said.
