What were the financial terms of the deal? Was the Hatchet reimbursed for producing the content?
The University basically said, “make a magazine and we’ll print it and sell it.” So there was nothing to be reimbursed for. The University paid for the printing and we produced all of the editorial content. It didn’t cost us any money to make because we had all the photos and had done all the reporting.
We knew, going into the NCAA Tournament, that we were doing this magazine so we redirected our efforts and tried to get material that would work in the stories we planned out.
So what was in it for us? The Hatchet put out a quality magazine (I think) and showed the University and the community that we could do so. We also saved the University close to $30,000 in editorial and photo work. I believe the quality we gave them is some of the best they could get. Jeff Baum’s photography is top in the country and the design is great.
Hope that answered the question.
