Volleyball explodes on Explorers

Three-time Atlantic 10 Player of the Week Tracee Brown recorded a double-double with 18 kills and 13 digs, leading the GW volleyball team to an easy three-game victory over visiting La Salle Tuesday night at the Smith Center. The win gave the Colonials (22-5, 13-2 A-10) a half-game lead over Temple, which hosts Rhode Island and Massachusetts this weekend.

The score, 15-3, 15-9, 15-9, showed the consistency of the team’s domination. GW played well defensively and left few holes on the court. LaSalle (12-20, 0-14 A-10), still winless in the A-10, seemed flustered, and players often flailed their arms attempting to hit the ball.

LaSalle is at the bottom of our conference, senior tri-captain Jill Levey said. They really didn’t have anything to lose.

Senior Renee Arnold had nine kills and only one error in 20 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .400.

Renee played great, head coach Jojit Coronel said. Overall, it was a great team effort.

After GW won the first game against the Explorers, Coronel emptied his bench. Freshman Laura Harrison recorded her first kill as a Colonial.

We did well considering the change in the lineup, Coronel said. After the first game, I wanted to split the squad and give everyone playing time, and I’m happy with the way things turned out.

Senior Julie Jahnke, who finished with a .417 attack percentage (six kills, one error in 12 total attacks), said the win demonstrates the depth of GW’s team.

It really showed how much strength we had on our bench, Jahnke said. We were able to play all the players and still win.

GW finishes its very successful regular season at home against Duquesne Saturday. It will mark the final Smith Center match for seniors Arnold, Brown, Jahnke, Levey, Suzana Manole and Adrianna Gucciardi.

I really enjoyed the season, Jahnke said. There was a high-intensity level because there were six seniors. Jo has done an excellent job. We’re going to win (Saturday). It will be a nice way for the seniors to finish out the season.
