The GW women’s soccer team was out-shot and out-scored in two road losses against top Atlantic 10 Conference teams last weekend.
The Minutewomen of UMass topped the Colonials 2-1 Saturday, while Rhode Island routed GW 5-2 Friday.
In the two games the Colonials (4-11, 3-3 A-10) managed a total of only 13 shots -four against Massachusetts and nine against Rhode Island. The two opposing teams fired 18 shots each against GW.
It was a crucial road trip for the team, which had a losing non-conference record but was atop the A-10 standings.
One of the few bright spots for GW came from red-shirt freshman Kim Warner, who scored her fifth goal, and Erin Coppedge, who scored her team-leading eighth and ninth goals of the season
The Colonials host Duquesne Friday with only four conference games remaining.
UMass 2, GW 1
Saturday, Oct. 15
UMass (9-5, 5-1 A-10) scored early on GW’s goalie Christine O’Malley when forward Brooke Bartlett took a pass from senior forward Kara Green and hit the back of the goal 20 minutes into the first half. The Minutewomen also scored in the 54th minute when Green teamed up with Martha Conover for what turned out to be the game-winner. UMass went on to win 2-1.
GW mounted a late comeback attempt when Warner scored off assists from Tiffany Williams and Coppedge, but the Colonials, who were out-shot 18-4, fell short of victory.
Rhode Island 5, GW 2
Friday, Oct. 13
Rhode Island (12-1-1, 4-1-1 A-10) defeated GW 5-2 Friday at the URI Soccer Complex.
Seventeen minutes into the game, Rhode Island’s Mary Drapetis sent a pass across the GW goal box to a waiting Heather Kasparek, who slipped the ball past GW goalie Christine O’Malley.
Two minutes later Kasperek scored again, this time off a pass from midfield.
Down two goals, the Colonials fought back and showed their resilience.
Within a five-minute span in the first half, GW’s Erin Coppedge scored twice to tie the game at 2-2. It looked like the Colonials would take the tie into halftime, but Rhode Island’s Shannon Kittelson stole the ball on the GW side, broke free and scored on a breakaway in the 44th minute. The goal was a big blow to the Colonials, who gave up another goal to Kittleson, while Laura Seymour scored the game’s final goal.
