Good morning from Greensboro. We have a full day of basketball ahead of us in the Coliseum. First matchup of the day is seventh-seeded Wichita State vs. tenth-seeded Seton Hall. Interesting game as one of the nation’s top mid-majors (and also the first school Danilo (J.R.) Pinnock committed to) faces a middling Big East squad. Seton Hall beat the once-hot St. Johns, Syracuse, N.C. State and West Virginia.
Wichita beat Providence, Southern Illinois and lost to Illinois by one point. Will be a good matchup because of the geographical location. Seton Hall is in New Jersey and Wichita State is in Kansas. Seton Hall has a serious fan presence here but NOTHING like the Dukies.
Game two of the morning session is second-ranked Tennessee and Winthrop (15 seed). Washington Post columnist Tony Kornheiser has Winthrop upsetting the Vols. I’m not sure I buy that. Bruce Pearl, who led his Wisconsin-Milwaukee team to greatness last year, could coach. Tennessee has some big wins this year including a 95-78 upset at Texas and a win at then-No. 2 Florida. Tennessee should win this game on sheer confidence and experience.
The evening session starts at 7:10 with those Colonials of GW. Heard of them? Now, both Kornheiser and Wilbon have GW losing in this difficult first round matchup. While I’m not in the business of ruining my objectivity to make a pick, most people are choosing Wilmington to top GW. It should be interesting. Wilmington knows how to close games out. If GW doesn’t come out full throttle, it will be tough to beat this Wilmington squad. As everyone is saying, they want the game in the 50s.
Hobbs’ dealing with the media is interesting. He is not telling anybody anything and that leads me, and other members of the media, to believe that he is trying to throw his opponent off. Wilmington players and coaches say that they are preparing to play against Pops but the uncertainty can through things off.
Interesting stuff. Stay tuned.
