GW’s representation was sparse this year in the Atlantic 10’s postseason awards, announced Tuesday night. But in the awards that will count in years to come, GW was golden.

For the fifth time in school history (more than any other A-10 school) a GW player was named A-10 Rookie of the Year. This time it was freshman guard SirValiant Brown, the third freshman in the last four years to lead the league in scoring (Shawnta Rogers last season was the lone exception). The other Rookies of the Year for GW were Mike Brown, ’82; Troy Webster, ’83; Yinka Dare, ’93; and Alexander Koul, ’95.

Brown and freshman swingman Chris Monroe (seventh in the league in scoring and 10th in rebounding) represented GW on the six-man All-Rookie Team. Monroe earned his fourth Rookie of the Week designation Sunday. Combined with Brown’s six, the duo set an A-10 record for Rookie of the Week awards for a pair of teammates.

Brown also was named to the All-Conference Second Team. He is the only freshman on an All-Conference Team and is only the sixth freshman in A-10 history to be named as high as the Second Team.
