The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced Wednesday that 200 miles of radio cable will be installed in the Metro system.
The installation is part of a plan to improve wireless technology coverage and first responder radio communication, Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said in a release. The addition will allow for two cables to run along 100 miles of the tunnels, according to the release.
“We are looking for every opportunity to move this project along efficiently and to deliver incremental benefits as we complete each segment and turn it over to the telecom providers,” Wiedefield said.
He said the the Metro could not set a specific time frame on the project because they are still testing the engineering between the Glenmont and Forest Glen Metro, according to the release.
The installation will occur at night and on the weekends, to minimize its impact on train operation.
Wiedefeld was appointed as the Metro’s leader back in November and has been tasked with increasing efficiency and reducing costs.
