University President Steven Knapp was named the inaugural chair of the 100,000 Strong Academic Advisory Council to give guidance on academic issues between China and the U.S., according to a University release Tuesday.
The 100,000 Strong Foundation, which was launched in 2013, aims to increase the number of U.S. students studying in China and learning Mandarin. The board Knapp is chairing will advise the foundation on educational issues between the two countries.
“I am honored to help guide the growth of the 100,000 Strong Foundation, the premier people-to-people platform between our two countries,” Knapp said in the release.
Members of the Academic Advisory Council include current and former leaders from colleges and universities across the U.S., including the presidents of New York and Xavier universities.
Knapp also serves on the Council of the Confucius Institute Headquarters. GW leaders like Provost Steven Lerman have focused on China, and had planned to start a GW satellite campus in Beijing before stepping back from the plans last year.
