The Department of Education released its list of colleges with the highest tuitions and net prices on Wednesday.

GW’s tuition ranked eighth-highest among private universities – and the highest among its competitor schools – for the 2013 school year at $47,343. Tuition typically increases at about 3 percentage points per year, but is locked in for current students through GW’s fixed tuition policy.

GW’s average net price, the out-of-pocket cost after aid is given out, increased 2.5 percent between 2012 and the following school year, totaling $32,826.

Nationwide, net price among private universities averages about $20,000. GW’s peer school New York University had a higher net price than GW at $34,268 for the 2013 school year, according to data released by the Department of Education on Thursday.

Between 2008 and 2013, middle class families at GW have seen the amount they pay after receiving federal aid increase more than other income brackets – about 28 percent more on average to attend GW.
