A comedic hypnotist, a casting call for the new GW admissions film and a casino night in the Marvin Center are some of the activities the Student Activities Center promises will MONOPOLYze the lives of GW students this week.
As students begin to sharpen their pencils and get back in the groove of waking up before noon, they can take part in Welcome Week activities, which have a new GWopoly game theme. The board game will be on sale for $20 this week in the Marvin Center first floor lobby.
The new GW version of Monopoly is filled with GW hot spots and traditions, with Thurston Hall and the Lincoln Memorial in the places Boardwalk or Marvin Gardens normally occupy. The game allows GW students to roll the dice and purchase GW property as if they were President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg buying property around the city.
This is really a keepsake, said Matt Kernkraut, a student member of SAC. Even if only one person buys it, but four people play it, they’ll all be affected by it. This is one of those things that students can buy and show their kids someday – they can keep it forever.
Kernkraut said the last semester ended at a high point with Midnight Madness promoting school spirit, and he hopes Welcome Week will keep school spirit high. All throughout the week, George, GW’s mascot, will be seen around campus dressed in a prisoner’s outfit to help promote Welcome Week activities, he said.
Welcome Week kicks off Tuesday night with Tom Deluca, a comedic hypnotist. Wednesday afternoon the University will hold a casting call for the new GW admissions film. In keeping with the Monopoly theme, the Program Board will host a panel discussion called The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, about Microsoft as a potential monopoly, Wednesday night.
Kernkraut said a highlight of the week, which includes Karaoke Thursday night and a Sports Trivia Challenge Saturday, is MarvinOpoly Friday night. Friday night’s festivities include three floors of fun, food and friends and lots of free stuff. Students can play blackjack, dance to the music of King James and the Serfs of Swing, snack on a boardwalk and play Twister.
