The GW women’s basketball team lost to Southern Methodist University 77-62 in the finals of the Hoops for the Cure Tournament at the Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas, Saturday.
The competitive Colonial women were one half away from winning the tournament, but a strong Lady Mustang second half defeated GW. The Colonial women (2-2) advanced to the final after dominating Central Michigan University 94-62 Friday behind senior Elisa Aguilar’s 19 points.
GW won its home opener 79-65 over Howard Nov. 22. GW will be tested Saturday as No. 7 Rutgers University comes to the Smith Center to face the Colonial women at 7 p.m.

GW lost in the final of the tournament Saturday, as Southern Methodist’s lopsided rebounding and free-throw advantage proved too much for the Colonial women. Despite just a 31-30 halftime deficit, with both teams shooting exactly 12-of-31 from the field, GW found itself outscored 20-4 from the free-throw line in the game.
Aguilar, Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Cathy Joens and junior Leslie Carlson led the Colonial women. Each scored 13 points for GW. Behind the arc, GW shot a suspect 6-of-21, or just under 29 percent. The Lady Mustangs (3-0) were led by Karlin Kennedy, who scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in 37 minutes of action.

The Colonial women had five players in double-digits as GW trounced the Lady Chippewas 94-62 in Friday’s opener.
GW took 23 more shots than Central Michigan, a result of the Colonial women’s sizable 53-36 rebounding edge. Senior forward Starr Jefferson started the game and tallied her first career double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
(Jefferson) earned a starting spot because she works so hard and just battles and bangs, and I give her all of the credit in the world, Coach Joe McKeown said according to a GW Sports Information press release. Aguilar is getting her game back after the off-season surgery. If she’s scoring 19 points when she isn’t 100 percent, I can’t wait to see what she does when she is 100 percent.
GW led 42-30 at halftime and 57-44 with less than 14 minutes remaining when GW unleashed an offensive attack. Senior Marlo Egleston hit two three-pointers and Aguilar added another in a 1:41 span.
Later, GW’s Carlson made layups on consecutive possessions, and after three GW free-throws, the Colonial women extended their lead to 73-44 with just over eight minutes left in regulation. All 11 Colonial women put points on the board in the win.

The Colonial women led the competitive Lady Bison 61-55 with less than seven minutes remaining when Aguilar hit the baskets.
Great players deliver when you need them to, McKeown said in a press release.
GW’s pressure defense forced 32 Howard turnovers while junior Petra Dubovcova produced offensively for the Colonial women, tallying 21 points and 13 rebounds.
