GW women’s soccer coach Michele Rodriguez-Smith resigned from her position Friday after compiling a 14-25-1 record over two seasons at GW.

After four seasons as a GW assistant coach, Rodriguez-Smith was named interim head coach before the 1998 season. In her first season, Rodriguez-Smith’s team opened 0-6, but then reeled off a school-record eight straight wins. The Colonial women finished 11-10 (9-2 Atlantic 10). In 1999, the team was picked to finish third by the A-10 coaches but could not recover from a school-record eight-game losing streak to start the season and finished 3-15-1 (3-7-1 A-10). The 1999 squad had the most losses and lowest winning percentage in school history and missed the A-10 Tournament for the first time in seven years.

Rodriguez-Smith was unavailable for comment, but Athletic Director Jack Kvancz commented Sunday on the resignation.

She had a tough year, he said. There were a lot of personal things, and she decided she had had enough.

Kvancz said Rodriguez-Smith will continue to coach soccer but with a youth league.He also said it may take awhile, but GW hopes to hire a new coach as soon as possible.

You don’t want to lose a recruiting cycle, he said.
