It would be interesting if you could discuss how you balance being a fan and a reporter and columnist.
Great question AAQ. To be honest, I’ve never been a “real” fan. I came into GW and began writing for the Hatchet in my first month in Foggy Bottom. When basketball season rolled around, I was told that I would be covering the men’s team. I have only sat in the stands for one game during my time at GW and had a hard time bringing myself to cheer.
Coach Hobbs said something interesting to Will and I at a preseason meeting. He said if his team is playing lousy, he has no problem with us saying it. This is true. After GW crawled from behind to beat Augusta State in the preseason opener, I did not hesitate to print disparaging things about the team.
Of course, I’d like to see GW win but I stay completely objective. When there is something to report, I report it without hesitation of the repercussions from the GW fan base. My real ethical quandry would be if Connecticut were playing. Keep the comments coming!
