A $30-million facelift to the Georgetown waterfront might include the city’s largest ice-skating rink along with restaurant renovations.

The MRP Realty designs are not finalized, but plans presented to Georgetown’s Advisory Neighborhood Commission Aug. 29 show a 9,000 square-foot ice rink that, if built, will surpass the National Gallery of Art’s Sculpture Garden Ice Rink in size. The group, which bought Washington Harbour last year, also plans to remodel restaurants such as Tony and Joe’s Seafood Place.

“There is a lot of square footage not being used,” Julie Chase, a spokeswoman for MRP, said, of the current harbor layout. “We want to populate the harbor and make it a place where people can relax, while enjoying the largest ice-rink in D.C.”

The rink would be open during winter months, while a fountain would stand during the rest of the year. Chase said the designs seek to attract both working professionals and the weekend and evening crowds.

The firm aims to begin construction in 2012 and finish within a year.

“MRP’s plans will humanize the space and offer a seasonal experience to the D.C. community,” Chase said.
