D.C. hipsters now have another flea market to peruse in their search for unique jewelry and mason jar-themed decorations.
The U Street Flea Market will finally reopen in late March after weeks of snow-related delays. The market, located next to Nellie’s Sports Bar, will be open on Saturdays and Sundays. The 9th and U streets location will have space for up to 30 vendors.
The manager, Michael Sussman – who has also run Georgetown Flea Market for 40 years – said the market will have more jewelry and decorative items, instead of mostly furniture like at his Georgetown location, to appeal to a younger age group.
“They’re not interested in their parents’ oak or mahogany furniture. There will be a lighter feel to it,” Sussman told the Washington Business Journal.
U Street Flea Market opens just months after the Brooklyn-based market, District Flea opened on U Street last fall with about 100 vendors. Georgetown Flea and Eastern Market are also both open in the District on Sundays.
“These kids are down on U Street where a lot of the action is, and they’ve shown an interest in collecting,” Sussman said. “So we thought it would be fun to open a market on U Street. It’s a very eclectic community.”
