Daniel Egel-Weiss, the Student Association’s highest-ranking senator, announced his bid for the organization’s top seat Thursday.
Egel-Weiss, the SA Senate president pro tempore, said he will tackle issues like alumni engagement and campus safety, specifically looking to improve the University’s 4-Ride system.
“Every point of my platform is something that I could go knock on somebody’s door in 2121 Eye St. to say this is something I think we should pursue,” Egel-Weiss said, referring to Rice Hall.
The junior said he is already in talks with administrators to add text message alerts to let students know their 4-Ride van is five minutes away and then that it has arrived.
He said he also wants the system – which transports about 300 people on weeknights – to prioritize passengers who are traveling alone or in small groups to eliminate wait times in potentially risky situations.
To increase alumni engagement, Egel-Weiss said he wants to partner with the Department of Athletics and Recreation to promote networking events at home games.
He also proposed an online chat service that allows students to talk with academics advisers without a full appointment, mirroring the program offered by Gelman Library.
Egel-Weiss has spent two years on the SA Senate, where he served on the finance committee and helped lobby to increase the student fee.
President of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity, he also served on the Marvin Center Governing Board and the Student Dining Board.
He is the third candidate to join the race for SA president, in addition to Sen. Nick Gumas, CCAS-U, and sophomore Ryan Kaminsky.
