The Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity successfully accomplished something this weekend that few Greek-letter organizations have ever achieved, or even attempted. The traditionally black fraternity had a great time at its event: a non-alcoholic party. And if that is not amazing enough, hundreds attended the event and the fraternity raised money for charity at the same time.

Held in the Marvin Center ballroom, the party embodied the fraternity’s foremost objective – community service. Proceeds from admissions went to Martha’s Table, a non-profit charity for the homeless. Cans of food were collected, there was also voter registration

Alpha Phi Alpha President David Burt said one thing about the party disappointed him – that too few GW Greek-letter members came out to the event. And yet many of the GW Greek-letter organizations fail to understand why they are continually facing problems. The Interfraternity Council needs to take note of Alpha Phi Alpha’s successful party and make it a model for future Greek-letter events.
