Government admits Area 51 exists in document trove collected by GW’s National Security Archive

America’s secret military history is now a little bit less of a mystery.

The National Security Archive, housed in Gelman Library, published a batch of documents Thursday from the Central Intelligence Agency that may be the first declassified government record that Area 51 exists. The Mojave Desert military installation, the subject of widespread rumors and conspiracies, reportedly served as a hidden base for weapons and espionage programs.

You can read the full report, “The Secret History of the U-2,” here. The National Security Archive has been digging through U.S. secrets since 1985.
