The GW men’s and women’s tennis teams fell just short of winning titles in the Atlantic 10 Championships this weekend in Blacksburg, Va. The men reached the finals and finished second while the women reached the semifinals and finished fourth.

Both the men’s and women’s teams lost to Virginia Tech, which has won both the men’s and women’s championships the last four years. Both GW teams finished third last year.

The sixth-seeded GW men lost to No. 1 seed and host Virginia Tech 4-0 Sunday in the championship match. It was the Colonials’ ninth championship appearance in the 21-year history of the conference tournament, although the team has not won a conference championship since 1979.

GW’s No. 1 singles player, Anders Bergkvist, led the Colonials to the championship round with impressive 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-4 wins in the first two rounds. The Colonials shut out No. 11 St. Joseph’s 7-0 in the first round Friday and narrowly defeated No. 3 Duquesne 4-3 in the semifinals. GW’s Kinzie Wright came back from a tough first-set loss to defeat his Dukes opponent in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The fourth-seeded GW women lost in the semifinal round to top-seeded Virginia Tech 8-1 Saturday. In the consolation match Sunday, GW lost to Massachusetts 8-1, placing fourth overall.

The Colonial women had a bye in the first round and defeated Xavier 6-3 in the second round. GW’s Sarine Weingarten led the way against Xavier, winning her match 6-0, 6-1. Ghada Skaff also played well against the Musketeers, winning her match, 6-2, 6-2.

But Weingarten and Skaff were not as successful in the semifinals against their Virginia Tech counterparts, both losing in straight sets. The Hokies also swept GW 3-0 in doubles play. Weingarten and Skaff teamed up in doubles but lost a close match, 8-6. Katrina Stastny won the only match for GW, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
