An outside accrediting body will assess the University Police Department this month as part of a reaccreditation process that occurs every three years.

Representatives from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies will monitor the department and hold a public comment session for the GW community on Monday at 5 p.m. in the Marvin Center. People who cannot attend the meeting can also write or call in their comments to CALEA.

“It’s an opportunity for people of the community to discuss how we are doing to the (CALEA) representatives,” UPD Chief Dolores Stafford said.

CALEA accredits police forces based on the “quality of an agency’s policies, procedures, management, operations and support services,” according to a University news release. UPD is among only about 1 percent of campus police forces internationally that are accredited, Stafford said.

Representatives from CALEA will be on campus starting Nov. 15 to ensure that UPD meets all the 460 standards that they require for accreditation.

The news release said, “Public comments are taken into consideration before any organization can be accredited.”
