Not sure what happened on the river or on the green in GW sports this weekend? Here’s a recap of what you may have missed.
Men’s Rowing
Men’s rowing finished in second place in the Oliver T. Carr Bowl standings at this year’s George Washington Invitational after winning six races and totaling 111 points.
The Colonials won all three races in the morning session against Holy Cross. GW’s Varsity 8 finished in 5:45.10, narrowly besting the Crusaders by just two seats. The 2nd and 3rd Varsity 8 edged Holy Cross by a wider margin, each contributing 12 points to the team’s Carr Bowl point total.
GW fought through a 15-20 mph tailwind in the afternoon session against Gonzaga. The Varsity 8 rowed another close race against the Bulldogs, finishing with a time of 5:38.70 to Gonzaga’s time of 5:43.40.
Women’s Rowing
The Colonials finished third in the Howard W. Wilkins Bowl and totaled 77 points in a three-race sweep of conference rival Dayton.
The Varsity 4 finished with a sizeable lead, finishing with a time of 7:33.60 to Dayton’s time of 8:10.10. The 2nd Varisty 8 also dominated the 2,000-meter course, besting the Flyers by 19 seconds.
In addition to wins by two GW boats in the Varsity B4 and the 2nd Varsity 8, the Varsity 8 completed the sweep against Dayton with about a six-second victory. Despite the strong performance against Dayton, GW would drop a trio of races to Navy, the first-place winner of the two-day event.
Golf
Playing at the site of this spring’s 2015 U.S. Open, golf finished 15th in the 18-team field of Seattle University’s Redhawk Invitational at 94-over 934.
Despite going 34-over-par at 314 in Monday’s opening round, the Colonials totaled 312 and 308 in the Invitational’s final two rounds. The average individual score in the final round was 78.24 on the 7,303-yard layout.
Junior Steve Piela guided GW in the final round, finishing with a 6-over 76 (76-80-76) to tie for 42nd place out of 92 players. Freshman Vince Palazzolo went 76, 75 and 82 in the event’s three rounds to finish one shot behind Piela to tie for 47th.
