Women’s water polo cruised to a 18-6 win against St. Francis-Brooklyn after a record-setting performance by freshman Jacqueline Bywater in the nightcap of a doubleheader at the Smith Center on Saturday.
Bywater set the program record for most points in a season, hitting 114 points after scoring eight goals and 11 points over both games today. Rachael Bentley had the previous record, scoring 111 points in 2013.
The team lost to No. 10 Princeton during the afternoon, 14-5.
“I was proud of our win and that we were able to respond after having a tough loss this morning,” said head coach Adam Foley. “They put in a great effort, especially on the defensive end.”
The Colonials jumped out to a quick lead, scoring the first seven goals of the game and ending the first quarter ahead 7-0. St. Francis only got as close as seven after GW’s solid defensive performance in the first quarter.
“We had great steals and better help and communication on the perimeter,” Foley said of his defense’s improvements after the first game.
Bywater dominated the score sheet in the second game, scoring eight goals. She became the third player in GW history to reach the 60-goal threshold in a single season and the first since Kira Cannon in 2003. Sophomore Maddy Johnson added five goals on the day and freshman Scarlett Hallahan had three.
“As an attacker you don’t have anything without your team, every goal comes from an assist,” Bywater said. “I have to give it all up to my team for stepping up.”
The team now heads into a bye week. GW returns to action against Michigan on April 11 in Princeton, NJ.
“You can’t take it easy,” Bywater said of the bye. “Try to better our seed [going into the end of the season].”
