The Board of Trustees set aside about $275,000 to upgrade space in the Marvin Center in its budget for next year, which was announced Friday.

The renovation project, which went through a cost analysis by the Division of Operations last month, could include more collaborative meeting rooms, printing and computer stations and a new office layout for some of GW’s largest student organizations.

After student leaders, like Dylan Pyne and John Richardson, spent the fall lobbying for more student space on campus, they focused their efforts on the fourth floor after GW announced the Center for Student Engagement would move off that floor and up to the fifth floor. The CSE office takes up about one third of space on the fourth floor, Richardson said.

Richardson will take control of the project next year as chair of the Marvin Center Governing Board, and said he will keep student groups involved in the ongoing process.

“We still need to be mindful of what people want to see. There will be some opportunities to do some minor tweaks,” said Richardson, who stepped down as Student Association president earlier this month.

Pyne, outgoing chair of the Marvin Center board, touted student space as a top concern this year and praised the University’s commitment.

“The Board of Trustees showed that student space is not just some issue to push under the rug. It’s a big win,” said Pyne, outgoing chair of the Marvin Center Governing Board.

The CSE will be moved to the Marvin Center fifth floor this summer along with the GW Career Center, the Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service, the Office for Study Abroad and the Center for Undergraduate Fellowships and Research. The project is slated to be complete this fall, and will cost about $1 million.
