After an impressive 2-0 week for the women’s volleyball team, junior outside hitter Kelsey Newman and freshman setter Emily Clemens were recognized by the league Monday for their instrumental play.
Newman was named Atlantic 10 Offensive Conference Player of the Week while Clemens earned the A-10 Rookie of the Week honor.
Newman had a career weekend for the Colonials. Newman led all players in Friday’s win with 21 kills against a Dayton team that leads the nation in blocks per set. In Saturday’s win over Duquesne Newman tied for first with 16 kills.
On the weekend Newman hit .309 with 37 kills and 24 digs averaging 4.62 kills and 3.00 digs per set.
Newman leads the Colonials in kills (217) , good enough for fifth in the A-10.
Setting the ball to Newman on the weekend was Clemens who earns her first A-10 honor of her GW career. Clemens becomes the second GW freshman to earn the Rookie of the Week honor after freshman middle blocker Chidima Osuchukwu earned the award twice earlier in the season
Clemens averaged 12.12 assists and 3.25 digs per set, totaling a pair of double-doubles this weekend Clemens finished the weekend with 97 assists and 26 digs.
Clemens’ weekend was highlighted by a career high 52 assist night in Friday’s 3-1 victory over Dayton. Clemens also tallied 14 digs in the match, which helped the Colonials earn their first win over Dayton since the 2002 A-10 tournament.
Clemens now ranks sixth in the A-10 with 10.11 assists per game.
GW, who has now won three straight matches, returns to the Smith Center floor on Friday when they face Fordham at 4 p.m.
