Former Colonials forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu is returning to D.C., this time for a chance to play with the Washington Wizards.
Mensah-Bonsu, along with other free agents Josh Childress, Xavier Silas and D’or Fischer, were all extended offers by the Wizards to attend training camp this fall.
Mensah-Bonsu has a chance to making the team. On the one hand, Washington have 15 players under contract for the 2013-14 season, but last week, two Wizard’s forwards – Emeka Okafor and Chris Singleton – went down with injuries. That opened the door a bit more for the four invites.
The Wizards are expected to enter camp with 19 players, leading up to their preseason opener Oct. 8 against the Nets.
Mensah-Bonsu played for GW from 2002 to 2006, helping lead the Colonials to NCAA tournament births in his junior and senior year.
Since then, Mensah-Bonsu has played overseas in Italy, Russia, Spain, Turkey and France, as well as in the NBA, most recently with the New Orleans Hornets from 2010-11.
