The GW baseball team won its first Atlantic 10 series of the year after beating St. Bonaventure 10-1 Sunday at Barcroft Park. The Colonials and Bonnies split a doubleheader Saturday in Arlington, Va.
St. Bonaventure (13-12, 3-6 A-10) won the A-10 Championship last season and received the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA regional.
Junior Josh Wilkie threw seven scoreless innings, striking out seven and picking up his second win of the season. Junior Dan Pfau allowed one run in two innings of work.
“I felt awesome today,” Wilkie said. “It was a really nice day and my father was at the game so I probably put some extra effort in.”
“The coaches told me, ‘All the team needs out of you is a win, no excuses,'” Wilkie added. “Joe (Michalski) called a great game behind the plate.”
The Colonials’ 2-0 lead increased on an offensive explosion in the fourth inning, scoring five runs, including freshman Charlie Kruer’s three-run homer. Senior Brad Rosenblat continued his strong offensive production, going 2-for-3 while driving in three runs and scoring twice. Junior Tom Shanley went 2-for-4 from the plate.
In game two of the doubleheader, GW’s bullpen blew a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning in a 6-4 loss. Senior Nate Casagrande allowed a two-run homer in the sixth allowing the Bonnies to take a 5-4 lead. The Colonials could not rally and split the doubleheader.
Senior Ryan Roberson stayed hot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI on two home runs. He already has nine home runs this year, which is tops in the A-10.
Through three innings, the Colonials trailed 2-1 in the opening game Saturday. But GW rallied, scoring three runs to pick up a 4-2 victory.
Sophomore Derek Lutz picked up his third victory of the year, allowing just two runs on five hits while pitching a complete game. Senior Ryan Roberson went 2-for-3, driving in one run. Junior Matt Owens (1-for-2) led off the sixth inning with a solo home run, which was his second homer of the year.
The Colonials return to action Tuesday against Towson at John Schuerholz Park at 3 p.m.
