GW falls in global research-based ranking

GW slipped to the No.135 spot in the Times Higher Education World University rankings released today.

This year, GW received 49 out of 100 points, tying the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and the University of Virginia. The University was ranked No. 95 last year.

Sixty percent of the Times Higher Education standings are based on research, specifically each university’s volume, income, and reputation of research.

The rankings differ from the U.S. News and World Report, which focuses more heavily on selectivity, undergraduate education and financial resources. GW made it to the coveted No. 50 spot on the U.S. News for the first time this year.

A breakdown of the scores, which includes the number of faculty citations and research, faculty reputation and degrees awarded and teaching surveys and international students and faculty, is not available for the newest set of rankings.

For the 2010-2011 school year, GW scored 73.2 points for citations, 33.6 points for research, 38.3 points for international outlook and 44.2 points for teaching. The overall score was also 49 points out of 100, sharing the number 95 spot with the University of Basel in Switzerland and the University of Arizona.
