The GW men’s soccer team will challenge the University of North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday at 6 p.m. at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C.

After shutting out Temple 2-0 last Sunday in the Atlantic 10 Tournament finale, the Colonials earned a spot in NCAA Tourney for the second time in three years. The NCAA announced the pairings on Monday.

The team is still riding high on a nine-game unbeaten streak, and with one more victory, they would tie a program record with 10 straight wins. Junior Andre Chapman, one of the team’s leading scorers, said their recent success has given players extra confidence.

“It doesn’t matter who we play, they are going to be tough,” he said. “This winning streak has boosted our confidence and helped us through the past few games. No one is intimidated.”

UNC and GW last played each other in 1979. The Colonials won that game, which was the teams’ only other meeting. GW (9-8-4) is not familiar with its opponent, but junior Steve Brown said it doesn’t matter.

“It all comes down to how we play,” he said. “Right now, we’re on top of the world. We definitely think we can win.”

But Chapman said GW’s winning streak and momentum could propel the team to the next round. The tournament is a whole new season, he added.

“We can win these games,” he said. “There are no undefeated teams. There is no one who can’t be beaten. If we keep playing hard, and the defense plays well and we get the ball in the net, we’re going to be okay.”

Brown also said he is excited to play in a new place against a different team.

“We’ve come into every game thinking we have a good chance,” he said. “So far, that’s been true. We’re not going to take them lightly, we have to play better than they do.”

The winner will play Virginia Commonwealth University on Tuesday, Nov. 23.
