Class registration for incoming freshman slowed yesterday when the registrar system crashed.
Elizabeth Amundson, the University registrar, said as of 5 p.m. Thursday, “nearly all of the 775 students scheduled to register have done so.”
The Division of Technology did not return requests for comment to explain the system outage, which shut out most students from registering between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
While students often experience slow-downs on BanWeb when hundreds log on to register for classes, a post on the Office of the Registrar’s Facebook page said that the system outage was not directly related to registration.
“This is a University-wide outage that occurred prior to registration opening, and was not caused by registration itself,” the post read. “We understand this is a very stressful situation and that you may have heard conflicting information.”
Students vented on the Class of 2015 Facebook group throughout the afternoon as many clamored for solutions to course closings and error messages.
Shane Feifer, an incoming freshman from Bucks County, Pa. who is majoring in international affairs, bemoaned the system outage after all of his coveted classes and back-up classes filled up.
“Around 4:30 I was finally able to try to register, but everything was filled. I have to make a whole new schedule,” Feifer said.
The rest of the Class of 2015 will register today or Saturday.
