WRGW, GW’s student-run radio station at 540 AM, has entered an agreement with the University to broadcast all GW men’s and women’s basketball games this season. The station will broadcast home and away games, except those played during winter break, when no one is on campus to hear the broadcasts. It is the first time the radio station has regularly broadcast away games and represents a tremendous opportunity for WRGW to gain the legitimacy it has lacked.
The station has had various problems in the past, ranging from antiquated equipment to a lack of support from the University. With the new broadcasting plan and the continued dedication of the station’s student employees, WRGW will improve its stature in the eyes of both the administration and students.
WRGW will have to wait many years before it will be considered worth the cost and effort of getting a federal broadcasting license, a hefty financial setback. But the station seems well-organized and has shown evidence of a long-term plan for where it wants to be in the near future.
With WRGW now available on GW cable’s system, this is the year for the station to drum up support from student listeners. Broadcasting the Colonials’ games is just the first step to hooking listeners, and WRGW should make every effort to ensure those broadcasts are well-publicized and as professional as possible. It would be pointless to waste what could be a great opportunity if no one is listening on the other end.
