is the latest addition to the women’s basketball coaching roster, leaving a standout career as head girls’ basketball coach at Riverdale Baptist High School in Upper Marlboro, Md., to join the Colonials next season.
At Riverdale Baptist, Richardson coached 12 All-Americans and saw 42 of her players go on to become Division I student-athletes. Over eight total years with the program, she earned a 234-32 overall record, nabbing five national championships on the way. In 2012, her team was the national champion in both the National Association of Christian Athletes and the National High School Invitational, earning a No. 6 ranking in the final POWERADE FAB 50 Girls’ Basketball national rankings.
“I am truly honored to join Jonathan Tsipis’ staff at GW,” Richardson said in a release. “Jonathan understands what it takes to be successful and is a proven winner. I have known him over the years, and he has a true passion to teach the game. I love what the future holds for GW women’s basketball and me as we continue to grow together.”
Richardson, who will work primarily with the wing players at GW, spent two seasons at the collegiate level with local programs. She helped coach American to the Patriot League title game in the 2007-08 season and took to the sidelines at Maryland over the 2008-09 season. That year, the Terps earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight.
Before her two-year break to work at the collegiate level, Richardson nabbed 2005 Black Coaches Association National Coach of the Year honors, after she lead Riverdale Baptist to a No. 2 national ranking from USA Today. She took the Crusaders to the NACA national title in 2006, and saw the team win the Association of Christian Schools International national title in the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
“I am very excited to add Diane Richardson to my staff as an assistant coach,” men’s basketball head coach Jonathan Tsipis said in a release. “I have known coach Richardson for a long time as a high school head coach and college assistant, and she has always coached at a championship level. Diane shares my vision in making the DMV our top priority in recruiting here at GW. Most importantly, I know coach Richardson will inspire our current players to grow on and off the court, making their experience at GW among the nation’s best.”
Richardson earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Frostburg State University and her master’s degree in management and finance from Central Michigan University
