University officials celebrated the achievements of the Greek Community in the Marvin Center Sunday night, honoring chapters and individuals for academic achievement, leadership and community service.
For the first time ever, all of the awards were determined by a panel of non-GW community members in order to ensure that the awards were not marred by favoritism or bias.
Executive Director of the Student Activities Center Tim Miller said he was excited about the changes implemented by the Office of Greek Life because he felt “the people who are really doing the best job are going to be honored in the end.”
The Phi Sigma Sigma sorority took home the most chapter-wide awards of any group, receiving the Leadership Award, Excellence in Housing Operations and Excellence in Chapter Operations.
“We are really excited and proud of the amount of hard work we’ve put in over the past year, and are happy to see it recognized,” Phi Sigma Sigma President Laura Riegler said.
Phi Kappa Psi, Zeta Beta Tau and Sigma Chi each took home two chapter-wide awards, putting them in a tie for second place for garnering the most overall awards.
Christina Witkowicki, director of Greek Life, said she felt this was a great culminating event for Greek life at GW.
“We celebrate everything that we’ve done, we assess what we could be doing better, and we bring everybody together,” Witkowicki said.
Unlike years past, the winners of gold, silver and bronze chapter awards were not announced at the ceremony, although Witkowicki said there was no particular reason as to why the change was made to not include these awards at the event.
